JANET LITTLE CALLED to say her daughter was visiting from Wichita, and could Jada come for her voice lesson a different day that week? As she talked, Ivy searched the junk drawer for a pencil to write down the date but could not find one. The drawer held everything else: emery boards, matchbooks, rubber bands, leftover nuts and bolts, and those funny angled pieces of metal from the backs of old picture frames. She answered the older lady abstractedly as she sorted through nail clippers, grocery receipts, outdated coupons, scraps of paper with odd notes on them, an empty pack of sugarless gum, a photograph of a sunset that she couldn’t remember saving, six double-A batteries, an assortment of paper clips, an herbal tea bag, and three wrinkled paper coasters covered in crumbs and hair. But not one pen or pencil.

After hanging up with Janet, Ivy yanked out the drawer in disgust and began to organize it. It was then that she came across a crumpled red paper.
